đŸ’« Breaking Free: Finding Strength in God to Overcome Addiction

October 27, 2025‱3 min read

Hey Faith Frannn 💕—let’s talk about something we don’t always like to bring up: addiction.

YUP I SAID IT

Whether it’s alcohol, toxic relationships, bad habits, or anything we turn to for comfort instead of God, addiction can weigh us down and keep us from the life He’s called us to live.

And trust me,

I’ve been there.

scared addiction

For years, I used alcohol to numb my pain and silence the parts of me that were hurting. It wasn’t pretty. It was messy, exhausting, and honestly, heartbreaking. There were nights I cried, mornings I couldn’t remember, and moments I didn’t even recognize myself. I chipped my front tooth once because I fell over a rock—like girl, I knew God was shaking His head that night. 😭

But even when I was over me, God never was. He kept calling me higher. I had to hit that point of complete surrender and say, “God, I can’t do this without You.” And that’s where my freedom began.

So if you’re in that place—or know someone who is—I want you to know this: God’s power is bigger than any stronghold. One step at a time, one prayer at a time, one surrender at a time—you can walk in freedom.

Let’s talk about what that looks like, and how you can find strength and healing in Him. 🌿

The Reality of Addiction: Why It’s Serious

Addiction isn’t just a bad habit—it’s a stronghold. It clouds your judgment, controls your choices, and distances you from who you really are—and who God called you to be.

I remember waking up halfway off my bed with a bunch of angry texts from a man I was dating. Or falling, chipping my tooth, and thinking, “Okay God, You have got to be done with me now.” But He wasn’t.

Proverbs 5:22 says, “The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.” When we’re stuck in cycles of addiction, we’re bound by cords we can’t break on our own. But the beautiful truth? Even the strongest chains can’t compete with God’s grace.

Surrendering to God: The Key to Breaking Free

My breaking point was surrender. I was tired of trying to fix myself in my own strength—it wasn’t working. The moment I truly gave it to God, something shifted.

Matthew 11:28 reminds us, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Sis, that’s not just a verse—it’s an open invitation. God doesn’t expect perfection; He just wants your yes. He’ll handle the rest.

Freedom doesn’t come overnight, but it comes through daily surrender. Every morning I had to choose obedience over old patterns, prayer over pouring a drink, and grace over guilt.

Practical Steps for Finding Freedom in God

  1. Pray with Intention
Start your mornings by inviting God into your day. Ask Him for strength, peace, and the power to resist temptation. Prayer doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be real.

  2. Seek Support
God never meant for us to fight alone. Find a mentor, therapist, church group, or friend who gets it. You need people who will remind you who you are when you forget.

  3. Replace It with Purpose
Breaking addiction leaves an empty space—fill it with something holy. Dive into Scripture, start journaling, go for walks, serve others. Do things that feed your spirit instead of your struggle.

Addiction may feel like an unbreakable chain, but God’s power still breaks chains—yes, even yours. đŸ™ŒđŸœ When you surrender, pray, and surround yourself with the right support, you’ll start to see the freedom He promised unfold in your life.

Remember, sis—God’s love doesn’t leave you in your mess. He meets you there and walks you out of it.
